about

This demo song is based on a poem by the Roman poet Catullus (carmen 2):

Passer, deliciae meae puellae,
quicum ludere, quem in sinu tenere,
cui primum digitum dare appetenti
et acris solet incitare morsus,
cum desiderio meo nitenti
carum nescio quid lubet iocari
et solaciolum sui doloris,
credo ut tum gravis acquiescat ardor:
tecum ludere sicut ipsa possem
et tristis animi levare curas!

I translated it into English...

The sparrow, delight of my girl
Whom she used to play with and hold in her lap
To whom she used to extend her finger
And provoke sharp bites
Whenever it is pleasing to my shining darling
To make some tender joke
And solace for her grief
Then I believe her heavy passion will subside
If only I could play with you myself
And lighten the sad cares of your heart!

...and then into a song!

The final version will be on my first album, Rarest Bird.

lyrics

That sparrow’s dead, the one my girl adored
She held it in her lap most every day
The bird she loved, but me she just ignored
I sat alongside them and watched them play
The bird would watch her with those shining eyes
She’d coyly offer up her fingertip
And though it never came as a surprise
I loved the way she giggled when it bit

Oh, I want you bad
I want your skin, your bones, your blood, your marrow
Oh, I hate to see you sad
Why don’t you just pretend that I’m a sparrow?

I’d bite you too if it would make you happy
Try and lift your grief with one of my dumb jokes
Your tears fall on the fire that’s inside me
I’m smoldering, my mind’s gone up in smoke
I wish that you would take me in your arms
And toy with me for hours, oh and I
Will keep you entertained, baby I swear
One of these days I’ll teach you how to fly

Oh, I want you bad
I want your skin, your bones, your blood, your marrow
Oh, I hate to see you sad
Why don’t you just pretend that I’m a sparrow?

Just tell me whether
We'll ever be together
Two birds of a feather, you and I
I hope someday you'll understand
You have me very much in hand
'Til then I guess I'll sit and wonder why

Oh, I want you bad
I want your skin, your bones, your blood, your marrow
Oh, I hate to see you sad
Why don’t you just pretend that I’m a sparrow?
